Self Priming Centrifugal Pumps - A Brief Overview!!!


A pump is the premium machine invented that has been drastically elevating millions of lives and industries around the world. Amid the collection of pumps, self priming centrifugal pumps are the simplest and widely used.

What are self priming pumps?

Self Priming Pumps are the ones that have been specially designed to enable the pump to re-prime itself when under lift conditions. These pumps are well known for their smooth operations and are primarily used for the transfer of fluid from one point to another in the industries. These pumps are mostly used in waste water, automotive, mining, petrochemical, food processing and steel industry.

Self-primers are commonly known as centrifugal pumps because this pump’s category is vulnerable to air-binding, when air in the pump prevents suction.

How does it work? 

When the pump is started a rotating impeller produces a partial vacuum; air from a suction pipe is drained into this vacuum and is merged into the liquid drawn from the priming chamber. The resultant air-liquid mix is then pumped into an air separation chamber, which is in the casing. In this chamber, the air is separated from the liquid and expelled out through a discharge pipe, at the same time as the liquid goes back to the priming chamber. This act repeats itself until the air from the suction piping is expelled and changed by pumpage and the priming has been finished.

  • These pumps are highly efficient as they eliminate the need of vacuum pumps, ejectors and foot valves.
  • These pumps are used to move liquids, slurries and fluids and do not create pressure; they displace fluids by causing a flow.
